The club was formed in 1897 and has been shooting on the same range since. The range is located on the property of John & Diny Dermer approximately 2km west of the Cheltenham Hotel. on State Highway 54, on the northern side of the road and the entrance is just before the Kiwitea Stream Bridge. Competation distances shot are 300yds, 300m, 500yds and 600yds. There is also a sighting mound at 100yds. The club is operational all year and there is activity on the range most Saturdays with shooting commencing normally at 1pm. The official club season for 2007/2008 is from 8 September 2007 to 28 June 2008, this entails in-house competition, interclub competition and various championship matches, importantly a number of Saturdays are reserved for practice where members can experiment with different loads, rifles, sights and other equipment. It is important to note that the club enforces very strong safety procedures and a ‘Chief Range Officer’ is responsible at all times on the range. These safety procedures apply to all club members, visiting shooters, observer and guests. Visitors and prospective new members are welcome and the club has a number of rifles available for use, (7.62 cal (308)), coaching is always available. Persons wishing to use the range for sighting purposes (Saturdays only) are welcome, and this would normally take place after club-shooting activities have ceased for the day. Club Membership fee $100, including National Rifle Association of New Zealand affiliation. For students and first year members it is $50.00, The club membership is approximately 30, this includes men and women as well as a number of junior members.
